As a newbie to the world of deer hunting it is essential that you have a checklist to ensure that you’ve packed everything you will need for your trip. Whether you’re going alone, with someone you know, or on a guided hunt there are key things that no one should leave home without. Planning ahead can help you avoid missing important things that are needed to make the trip much easier. It is important to keep in mind that the type of terrain you’re going to and the types of deer you will be hunting will make a difference on the supplies you will need. To get you started however a few items that you should pack for your trip are listed below.
Do Some Research
To be honest before you start packing it is idealistic to do a bit of research about where you’re going. If you can, learn about the type of environment it is and the types of weather conditions you might encounter while there. Learning the weather in the area you’re hunting will help you in packing supplies that you might need to take shelter from rain, wind, snow, or anything else. If you’re unable to find out about weather in a particular area, consider reaching out to other hunters who’ve had experience in hunting in that particular region. They can help you figure out what is needed and what you can leave home.
Basic Hunting Packing
Aside from other things you might need you will first want to make sure you have all of your hunting gear ready to go. You will need to pack your hunting rifle, a sling carrier for the gun, and ammo. When packing ammo be sure to pack more than you will need while not going overboard. Ideally having about 50 rounds for your main rifle is a great start. You will also need a side arm (if you wish), and a cleaning kit equipped with lens brushes for your scope.
Unless you’re sleeping in an RV you will also need to pack a sleeping bag, as well as a “space blanket”. Space blankets should be packed no matter what type of weather is forecasted for your trip. They are thin sheets of plastic that has materials inside that helps to contain about 80% of your body so that you stay warm while warped in it. They are very small and can easily be put into your pocket for later. Some hunters say they are great for keeping you warm should you happen to get lost on the trail or the weather happens to change without notice.
Last but certainly not least you’re going to want to pack some clothes to keep you both dray and warm while hunting. Keeping a fully stocked first aid kit on hand is also important should you or someone you’re with be in need. Packing food such as granola and energy bars is a great way to maintain nutrients while on the trail. Other than that the rest of the packing will depend upon the area you’re hunting. Be sure to ask some expert hunters what they would bring to ensure you’ve got everything you’ll need for a successful trip.
